Why is the world the way it is?
Is it based on one part of history upon another, or is it fulfilling some sort of ultimate destiny? If another earth was created just like this one and given a fresh start, would the inhabitants eventually head down the same path humans are now heading?
The world is the result of its past. Everything that happens in this world builds part of the new foundation for the next generation. That is why we still hold so many things dear that the Romans taught us. The idea is that we take hold of what is good and build on it and discard the bad. That doesn't always happen, and that is why the world doesn't ultimately always get better. Sometimes we tend to repeat our mistakes over and over which is why we have dark ages in the world.

This is going sound trite, especially from a fanatical Amnesty member, but the world is what people have made it to be.
Personal Greed has destroyed cultures and created poverty.
Personal Lust has killed many women
Personal Gluttonly has caused famines
As for a different Earth, yes it would be a carbon copy.
Why most people are very selfish and very Machivellian, and I am the one who forces all my friends to be really modest and appreciative.
That's very fatalistic, as both comments above declare that there's nothing we can do, the world is going to be what it is now regardless of any changes that might be made the second time around, because we are human.
Dystopia or Utopia? I don't believe in black or white. I don't think the world is that bad, really. It depends on which country you're in. Technology makes our life easier each time we advance, and each historical event depended on a handful of people.
I would like to think a different handful of people might produce different results. If one person did something different 2000 years ago, the world might be better/worse now.

The world is like it is because of the big bang.
Real randomness does not exists in my oppinion and I am absolutely sure that I am right.
So the world is as it is because of seamingless and calculatable masses collide with each and another, creates fiction, merges, spits out protons, taking in electrons and so on. I am a pure atheist and believe in science and not much more. I do not believe in Karma, Fate or anything else, so that is a major factor in my oppionion of the way the world is
