Interesting request from the First Presidency, will you take up the challenge?
FIRST PRESIDENCY INVITES MEMBERS TO READ THE BOOK OF MORMON BY 2006
See https://www.lds.org/news/0,5014,5014-,00.html
In a July 25, 2005, letter sent for priesthood leaders to read to congregations around the world, the First Presidency states: "The First Presidency Message in the August 2005 Liahona and Ensign magazines teaches of the divine message of the Book of Mormon and extends an invitation to all members to read it by the end of the year. Those who read the Book of Mormon will be blessed with an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a greater resolve to obey His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God."
To me, this is more of a test of personal obedience than a move to educate the Church. The prophet has promised some important blessings for doing this, but the other rewards are not as important as the safety and peace of knowing we have actively followed a living prophet. Our effort and exactness in fulfilling this challenge will indicate fairly accurately our commitment to the restored Gospel. I wonder how many members of the Church will actually do it.
Since I'm already some 300 pages in, I'm sure I'll finish by the end of the year Ever since I was motivated (here, in fact) to read the Book of Mormon cover-to-cover, as I had never done before, I have striven to read it nearly non-stop. I don't always get to it every day, but it is my goal to study the Book of Mormon along with anything else I happen to be studying. I want to understand it and incorporate its teachings into my life, to know it "backwards and forwards." I hope folks will take up the challenge, and then continue to read it regularly. I feel blessed for doing so.
Our ward as a whole has set a goal to take the challenge. In fact during Sunday School last week our Bishop taught the lesson. The lesson topic was based off this challenge from the First Presidency. We have been asked (our ward) to finish by 2006 and then write a letter to President Hinckley thanking him for the challenge and telling him what we learned by following his council, how it has influenced our lives and what we gained. All of the letters will be given to our Bishop and he will present them to President Hinckley.
Personally I just finished reading the BOM. I am starting it again. I have heard a lot of talk about how this challenge might be very important for us spiritually. Perhaps the First Presidency knows something about the near future and sees it necessary to read the BOM in order to make it through. Either way, I feel it is important to follow the council given to us from the Prophets. I will be taking the challenge.

I recently heard a story about a missionary in the mission field who wrote a letter home to his family about reading the book of mormon. According to a letter the missionary was in a zone meeting where they were visited by a member of the quorom of the seventy. After the lessons were done the GA opened up the floor to questions from the missionaries. One Elder asked the GA why the prophet was pushing for the members to read the entire BoM before the end of the year. The answer that was given by the GA is that President Hinckley told the GAs that the saints will need an extra measure of spirituality for after the first of the year.
Something interesting to think about.
You are quite right about having Pres Benson repetitively encouraging our members to read the Book of Mormon. It's the last days and what more do we need to help prepare us for things to come, or how to deal with situations in the Last days? We read the Book of Mormon because it contains the fullness of the gospel. Spiritual progression is everything! How can we spiritually progress if we do not know and understand what it is we need to do. We are a peculiar people...in the world but not of it! I think and feel that maybe members are beginning to take things of the spirit lightly and that it is time for some spiritual rejuvenation. The urgency of reading the Book of Mormon by 2006 in itself is a way to fulfill one of the 3 fold missions of the church..Perfect the saints. When I was studying at university I could not begin study in the library without reading the Book of Mormon for a half hour..It brought peace of mind and focus to my day! I am definitely taking up the challenge! I've been reading since the age of 14!
I have taken up this challenge. I find it is a great way to motivate people to read more than they would without such a challenge. I personally doubt there is anything more to the challenge than simply a desire to motivate people to make the study of this great book a priority in their/our lives.
We have all been told how important it is to read the BOM and our scriptures in general. However, we all get busy with life and often this daily study is neglected. By issuing this challenge, President Hinckly knows that many faithful members will do whatever is necessary to make it a priority in order to be obedient. This means, for this fall and early winter, many will be blessed with an increase in spirituality and knowledge. What a brilliant man he is.
My bishop issued a similar challenge two years ago in January. He challenged the ward to read the BOM by Easter. It took up the challenge then too. Many, at that time, refused. They said they didn't like to read the scriptures just for the sake of reading them. They didn't consider it studying the scriptures to do so. I find it interesting that those same people are now doing the reading by the end of the year as challenged by the Prophet. Why is it we will do it for our prophet, but not our local leaders?
