Psychologist Need Would When

I believe the only time you need to see a psychologist is when you are court ordered or you start to want to kill your self or others.

That seems extreme reasons, valid, but still extreme. I feel you can also see a psychologist when...

1. You need help evaluating your thoughts
2. Many are hinting to you that your behavior is strange
3. Loved ones are telling you that you should see one
4. You are having a hard time focusing your thoughts and cannot work, do normal things, etc.
5. You find yourself overly emotional for no reason
6. You recently experienced abuse, shock, or something for which you may need to have it 'walked through' or discussed to ensure you understand your place or the effects of it.

In addition to above, you may want to see a psychologist as a 'checkup', just as you would a physical checkup with a medical doctor. I believe psychologist and those who work with mental patients often have to do this.

Psychologist Need Would When

You may also know you need a psychologist when depression or anxiety manifests itself in physical symptoms.

I didn't realize I had mental problems, or I didn't recognize them as such because I felt pretty happy and never thought of harming myself or others in any way. I was just a worrier.

Then all of a sudden I developed extreme insomnia, headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat for no reason and couldn't eat.

Well, my doctor had a hard time convincing me it wasn't physical, but mental,. Finally, after ruling out disease, I let him send me to a psychologist. Actually it was a psychiatrist. She diagnosed me with GAD (general anxiety disorder) and put me on an anti depressant. It really worked, so I took it for about a year and I've been fine since. That was 5 years ago.

Before that happened, I thought "shrinks" were useless, or only for the week minded. Now I know better.
