Is the Medieval idea of a Quintessential or heavenly body that acts as the fifth element still present today?
Dictionary.com:
1. the pure and concentrated essence of a substance.
2. the most perfect embodiment of something.
3. (in ancient and medieval philosophy) the fifth essence or element, ether, supposed to be the constituent matter of the heavenly bodies, the others being air, fire, earth, and water.

I would like to propose that if there was a 5 th element that it would be consciousness. because all the other things are just there without anything to move it or guide it so the thoughts and conscious would be necessary to do the things as well as control it.
