When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets-British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter-before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man's Land. The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse-an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure.

Some friends and I went to see this movie about a week ago. The description of "Sweeping canvas" certainly describes this movie. Cinematically, it is epic and beautifully done! However, I didn't think the story line was all that wonderful. I thought it was kind of schmaltzy. None of the stories were very well-developed. I did enjoy the little French girl and her grandfather, but I honestly didn't really connect with the horse or the other people. I don't think they convincingly showed how the horse impacted anyone except by virtue of his showing up.

I was getting excited to see this one not only because it was a Steven Spielberg movie but because it also was nominated for an Academy but your review put a damper on things... Should I spend my $10 plus tax?

FairMaiden - It's really well done, cinematically. I'm just too cynical. It's not a movie that will play well on a small screen at home, so go see it in the theater to experience the full effect of the camera work.
