VIOLENT CRIME TAKES FIRST BIG JUMP SINCE '91
Murders in the United States jumped 4.8 percent last year, and overall violent crime was up 2.5 percent for the year, marking the largest annual increase in crime in the United States since 1991, according to figures released Monday by the FBI.

Well, as the worlds population grows, it necessarily means that crime will grow with it. While its disturbing to hear a percentage increase, I would be more informed to know where the murders went up. Crime in general would go up in poorer areas or areas in which crime is already high.
However, it is was good to see it not jump up so high for a decade or so, I am not so concerned about one year getting higher as long as its not a trend.
