Sinus Problems

Some humans suffer with their sinuses to the point that it gets infected.

1. The sinuses get clogged (by common cold, allergies, etc.)
2. The immune system attempts to fix it via inflammation
3. Inflammation includes swelling, which blocks the sinuses further
4. Mucus stagnates, providing a perfect place for bacteria to multiply
5. The bacterial infection becomes a full-blown sinus infection

Some people recommend a spray usually made of saline (salt and water) or some other medication. Others say that only prescribed medicine works. What works for you?

Nothing, actually. I'm currently on a(nother) round of anti-biotics -- this time the doc has me 28 days on! jAlong with a steroid sinus spray. This is my 3rd or 4th infection just this year. They are talking about x-rays of my sinuses and *surgery* of all things... I'm doing everything they've told me to do, and I can tell that when the medication is done, I'll still have a problem. It's very discouraging. The last thing I want is to have surgery up my nose (those sinuses are way too close to my brain), so I'm going to check out the natural healing options, before I talk to my doctor again.

Sinus Problems Health & Special Psychology

I'm currently having my 2nd sinus infection in as many months, and I got put on anitbiotics again. I am beginning to worry if this is going to become a chronic problem. The pressue is unbearable at times. I've tried sprays, medicines, etc and none has helped. The anitbiotics make them go away short term, but the problem seems to persist. It doesn't sound like there is really a solution for sinus infections other than surgery.

Problems Sinus

Unfortunately, this year is a bad year for it. I don't usually get sick, but I have a bad sinus infection right now. I was put on anti biotics for fourteen days instead of ten, and my son has had an ear infection four times since the beginning of this year. Its the particular strand of the cold this year. Its getting into everything from eyes, sinus, ears, nose, and throat and causing record amounts of infections this year in the United States. You are not the only one, its happening allot, especially in my family.

Has your doctor put you on Rhinocort? Usually with antibiotics, this helps clear up sinus infections good. Its a nasal spray that is not addictive and sends medication straight to your sinus's.

By the way, try not to use nasal sprays that much. Prolonged use makes the situation worse, and you will easily and quickly become dependent on them. You will find yourself needing a spray sooner and sooner, thats how you can tell your hooked. Its very hard to get off those nose sprays, you will not be able to breath for a week, even though your actually fine.

Another thing that can help the pressure that I have found works is to turn the shower on scalding and let it run. Sit in the bathroom next to the shower and really inhale the steam. After a while, it helps to start breaking it up. Another thing I use (yes, I have been really sick lately) is a product called Mucinex. This works wonders thinning mucous so its not so thick and clogging. It will initially cause allot of drainage, but that is from your sinuses and nasal passages, it really helps make it bearable. The Mucinex DM also helps to dry you up and stop your cough, that you probably will have due to drainage. Hope this helps some!

Unfortunately, I was simply put on Amoxicillin, and 500 at that. The spray I am using is Afrin Severe Congestion, but it hasn't helped much. I may very well try the Mucinex as was suggested, because the sinus pressure is so intense, my face and even teeth hurt. I would love to have some drainage right now, because everything is just sitting in the top of my nasal passages and not moving.

Sinus Problems

I have been suffering with my sinuses for about ten years now. What I hate the most about a severe sinus infection is, all the symptoms are so misleading. My body aches, I experience bouts of high fever, one or both of my ears hurt and I feel very lethargic. It is always a surprise to me when my physician informs me that I have a very bad sinus infection! I have stopped going to my physician and I am now seeing an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist. About two years ago, I was given NASONEX spray, for my sinus infection. I think it works very well but my gripe with this product is the cost involved. The spray bottle is very small and it is very expensive. I found an ENT specialist who recommended to "douche" my nose with salt water. He suggested that this could be done in two ways:

1) At the beach
2) At home

In my opinion, the first option is very disgusting. The specialist suggested to go into the sea, dunk your head in the sea water and inhale deeply. Then, blow out your nose using either your fingers or a handkerchief. Not very hygienic if you ask me. I would hate to taking a sea bath with someone doing this in the water next to me!

The second option is unpleasant but it works. Take a cereal bowl and fill it with distilled or bottle water. Add about 1/8 teaspoon (or about 1/3 tsp) of salt to the water and stir slowly. Microwave this solution for about 18 seconds (or until the saline solution is luke warm not too hot). Grab a few tissues and the bowl of salt water and head for the bathroom. Place your nose in the saline solution and inhale gently. Remove your nose from the saline solution and blow out all the excess solution with some tissues. Don't blow your nose too hard because you may rupture a blood vessel (yes I am serious). After blowing your nose, (this is really gross but necessary) examine your tissues carefully. If you see a lot of black or gray in the tissue, then this means that you are inhaling a lot of polluted air: exhaust, sahara dust, ordinary dust etc. If you notice that the cold is a pale yellow in colour, then you have a slight sinus infection. If your cold is green or brown in colour, please visit your ENT specialist immediately, since your sinus is severely infected. If you are seeing no colour at all, then this is a positive sign. It means that you may have a fresh cold or no sinus infection at all. If your cold is pale yellow, black or grey in colour, you may repeat the "nose douching" twice a day, on a daily basis.

In my opinion, the saline solution really works but it is a very uncomfortable and unpleasant way to control your sinus infection. But guess what? There is a cure or at least, something that may prevent your sinus from becoming infected. My ENT specialist encouraged me to eat a fruit called paw paw (I believe this fruit is known as papaya, in some countries). For all your sinus problems to disappear, you must incorporate this fruit into your diet on a daily basis! I have tried it and it works! I eat a bowl of this fruit twice a day, daily for one month and I got fantastic results! My sinus infection became extinct! However, I must confess that I HATE PAPAYA! I only force myself to eat it, in order to eliminate my sinus problems.

So, my suggestion is, to battle that aggressive sinus infection, the inexpensive way with no drugs involved! Just use your saline solution, together with the fruit papaya! If your nose feels healthy, then you may stop using the saline solution. But continue eating the papaya everyday! If you think about it, it is a healthier way to live when you stop using the antibiotics and consume only the fruit!

Also a sinus infection sufferer, thanks a bunch Geenie. I did the nose douche thing and yes it sorta strange and gross -- but gives a lot of relief for sinus infections-makes your nose feel really cleaned out afterwards. I am also going to try the paw paw.

Thanks again for some simple solutions to a pesky problem.
