Do some people choose a pet to replace something they are missing in their lives?

I think so. I don't think that all pets are purchased for this reason. Sometimes pets are a welcome addition to the family. Not that there was something missing, but something doesn't have to be missing to be enjoyable to have. Pets often do fill a void, but don't necessarily have to fill a void.

Yes, some people do this but in my opinion that's perfectly okay. A pet can be a a source of great comfort and solace to a lonely person. Of course there are other reasons for choosing a pet but I believe any pet owner should be able to love their pet and believe the pet adds a measure of happiness and joy to their lives.

I don't think that this would be a main reason for people to get a pet, I suppose for a few it would.
I know several people who have pets that they 'mother' because they haven't got children of their own to do this with, but I would say that they are in the minority.
I think the main reasons would be either that they have always had a pet in their family, and wanted to continue doing so, or they think that it is a great way of teaching their children to care for and look after an animal (which I think it is good)
As long as the pet gets looked after well, it doesn't matter to my mind what the original reasons for getting a pet were.
