LIVERPOOL boss Rafael Benitez opened the way for arch-rivals Manchester United to move in for Michael Owen after stressing signing another striker was not a priority.

The ex-Reds forward appears to be on his way out of Real Madrid after just one season following the arrival of Robinho and Julio Baptista at a cost approaching £40million.

From day 1, I thought it was a bad decision on Owen's part to leave the Premiership, and of all places, go to Real Madrid. Too many superstars on that team for my taste. There is such a thing as having too many good players on a team. Plus all the egos like Beckham and Ronaldinho. I respect Owen's game more than any other English player, even Beckham, and would love to see him back in the Premiership. If he has to go elsewhere, Juventus is always looking for a good forward.

Owen's situation at Real always puzzled me. When he was used he was easily one of their most clinical strikers with a high goals per game ratio. But he never got a chance.

Owen suits the Primera Liga fine, but there are obvuisly too many stars at Real.

I believe this opinion was validated when he left Liverpool in the first place to go to Real Madrid. It wasn't like Real needed him, because they had so many top class players already. Now he is back in England with his tail between his legs and took the deal that would pay the most money. I thought Owen was different than that, but I guess I was wrong.
