Support Discontinued On July 11, 2006, Microsoft will end support for Windows 98, 98SE and Me, which will have the resulting effect of making these operating systems less secure (https://www.microsoft.com/windows/support/endofsupport.mspx). Windows 98/Me are older operating systems, and are therefore inherently more vulnerable to attacks than newer operating systems. Now that Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to these operating systems any PC running them will become increasingly prone to security vulnerabilities. |
This means you will be forced into the new era of OS's JB. I know you absolutely have refused to upgrade, but now is a good time! I recommend XP but if you are looking for something cheaper and more customizable, now might be a good time to look into Linux.
However, despite the fact that they are discontinuing support, they should still be releasing security updates occassionally.
I spent most of my working life repairing electro-mechanical devices. I wanted to look at a computer as just another electronic device, but for years it just wasn't to be. I cut my teeth on windows 98, the ME. That had to be the most frustrating time of my life. I lost 1/2 of my research for my book to ME and started all over again.
I'm sure there is a special place in computer heaven for the people that developed Windows XP. I feel lucky that I lived long enough to have the pleasure of a system that for the past year has not "glitched" even once.
My e-mail provider did go down Sunday afternoon. I missed some good discussions and was reminded of the frustrations I used to know daily.
