4x4 debate: Enemy of the people

Doctors have joined the chorus of attacks on 4x4 vehicles with a warning that owners are recklessly putting other road users at risk by flouting laws over the use of mobile phones and seat belts.

I drive a small car, and it is rather scary when I'm driving down the highway to have a big 4x4 come barreling up behind me and tailgating me (when I'm even exeeding the speed limit!) Then when they pass, I see they are on their phones. This has happened many times.

People with big vehicles seem to have some kind of love affair with them, and it would be next to impossible to convince them to drive anything else, even when they don't need them for practical reasons.

They mentioned "saloon cars" in the story. What the heck is a saloon car?

Yep. It is official. Since some do-gooder doctors, along with all the rest of the "I know what is best for you" crowd are in on it, we must certainly do everything in our power to make sure that all the auto companies stop making the vehicles that people want to buy. Everyone MUST now buy ONLY Yugos and their Japanese equivalents. Right?

If you don't feel comfortable driving a shoebox, get a bigger car! SUVs are by far the safest vehicles to be in if you are in an accident (other than being in a semi, but that is a different story).

Didn't someone just chastise me in another topic for thinking that the Right is all about taking away liberty? Isn't that what these Leftist, socialist doctors in England want to do - take away everyone else's choices.

Maybe people (like me) are just jealous because we can't afford a bigger car undecided.gif

I don't believe they should force small cars on people, or take away their choices. Really I don't. But that doesn't mean I can't complain about it if I choose to.
It's not like I'm going to write to my local congressman about it. My SUV loving family would hates me if I had a part in the demise of their "prrreshhhusss." Besides, I doubt if we will see it happen in our lifetime anyway.

If I did have the money for a new car, I'd get a Subaru Outback. They have all wheel drive, good safety ratings and aren't too big. Not the prettiest things, but neither is my husband and I love him!

Since I work in the automotive industry, I see some of the things that are being pulled around the country. For example, California has passed legislation that will tell automakers how we must design the cars. The Federal government is raising the CAFE rates on us again. These are attempts to force us to stop building large pickups and SUVs, or at least tax us to death because those are the vehicles that people want.

I am always seeing 'studies' that show some doctors think that SUVs are the most persistent threat to human life since the Plague. Or, it is guns. Or maybe it is second-hand smoke. Eventually I get extremely tired of it all.

Well Nighthawk, at least the SUV owners can rest a little easier. The jealousy emphasis has turned more to Humvees and cell phone users since Detroit down-sized the SUV. And as long as we're on the subject of cell phones I see them used in all brands of cars, used on the job, (instead of working) and answered in the middle of a face-to-face conversation. I hear them ring in church service, or in the theatre. Is it fair to suppose that all these people didn't have a life before cell phones? I doubt it. I have seen the nicest people turn totally rude when a cell call is involved.
