St. Andrews Private School

I was surprised to see the government feature one of their info documentaries on this school. This is not the typical school. For one it seems to be managed by local whites / Syrians. The pupils and teachers are not typical. The principal and teachers boasted that they are so concerned for the welfare of their children that if a teacher takes a day off they will actually pay someone from their own money to take their place while gone. Mrs. Manning was impressed with that. I wonder if public teachers would do that? However, does anyone have reviews on this school?

St. Andrews Private School is one of the best Primary schools in Trinidad along with Dunross. I looked at this school many times for my son, I was impressed by the reviews I got. Nevertheless, it is quite pricey and not easy to get through.

Do they cater for special needs children too or just parents willing to pay their fees? What are their fees anyway?

Last time I checked, it was TT$2,500 a term and they provide book texts. They have some kind of system where they give the kids the books from their own library (not sure if they still do it) and the kids return them at the end of the year. Due to the demand, is not a matter of parents willing to pay the fees alone. It seems like they use a selection system since some parents seem to get through easily, others enroll their kids years before and others are rejected in the basis that there are not vacancies. Those are "rumors", not sure of the authenticity of them.

As far as I am concerned, they do not cater children with special needs.

Rather off topic, but...
Based on previous research, I think Dunross Preparatory School in Westmoorings is better than St. Andrews:

Their fees are almost the same TT$2,400 a term. I know they also ask for a one time fee for the school building (some share-holding thing). I cannot recall how much. They do cater for children with special needs such as ADD/ADHD. I know a couple of teens who went there who have serious cases of ADHD. I also recalled contacting them and they said they do cater for these children but they said to keep in mind that it is not a special education school hence they are limited to what they can offer.

Comments: My son goes to St. Andrews and let me tell you, they are excellent. I am a typical East Indian with a typical low income family. I registered my son when he was three weeks old and the list had almost ended. Anyway, he started off brilliantly and the teachers work one on one with your child. They still cater the books for the children and parents are very much part of the school. The PTA is very committed and everyone is a family. There is a strong community relation and the parents all interact as much as they could.

What's most important is that there are the Library Days. These days are rostered to parents on days that their children have library. The parents read a story to the class and the children get to borrow their books on a weekly basis. Dad's are also encouraged to participate and you would not believe the influence and encouragement this have on the young ones seeing their parents participate with them at the school. What's even more amazing is the Arts and Crafts participation of parents. There are even Art Exhibition displays.

More soever, teachers encourage the children to think positive and the children are taught the consequences of their action.

Anyone can get into the school, only if you really really want that to happen, you've gotta make it happen. I am not a Syrian or rich person, I am not 'ketching meh tail' in anyway, what infant my husband and I have done is invested in our son's future. I have another son who's nineteen months old and he's also going to the school come 2011.

There are many more offerings the school has available like foreign language etc. The SEA passes are excellent because the children are taught to believe in themselves. They help one another, the quickly assist those in need of help because they sense a togetherness and love and respect because it is bought down from the teachers and the children's cultures are developed because of how their teachers interact with them. St. Andrews is the best. I went to a Government Primary School and was inthe Junior Secondary System and I know what it's all like. So if you don't know anything, just do the research.

Comments: St. Andrews is not a good school. The teachers there are unqualified and use ancient teaching methods. They do not care for children with special needs. They also say that their school is always filled yet children are admitted throughout the year. They're just very selective about who they allow in their school ie they discriminate.

A friend of mine told me the same thing. She was working at one of the Embassies and she told me they did not want to accept her kids but they did accept the kids of the foreigners working in this Embassy. When she asked why, they told her they always have a reserve list to be filled by foreigners.

Comments: I am responding particularly to the comments made by 'Citizen' recently on this site and would like to assure you that these comments are quite inaccurate. As a non white/non Syrian teacher at St Andrews school for the past 8 years, I can guarantee that this school provides the best possible overall education to all of its students. We may be pricey, but this facilitates the maintainance of the school premises as well as 24 hour security, which sadly is required these days. All books and supplies are provided to the children and included in the cost of the fees. As a past student of Dunross, whose child currently attends St Andrews, I can tell you that the schools are very similar. My child was also on the waiting list by the way. As far as our teachers are concerned, the majority hold university degrees as well as other teaching qualifications. We also have a specific remedial room with 3 qualified and experienced teachers who work with children on an individual basis. I hope that this clears up any uncertainty about the school.
