San Francisco jury finds man who entered U.S. Illegally not guilty in Kate Steinle murder trial that grabbed national attention. Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, a Mexican man who had been deported five times before, said the fatal shooting of Kate Steinle on a San Francisco pier in 2015 was an accident. The case sparked national debate because San Francisco police had released him from jail before the incident under its "Sanctuary city" law. Then-presidential candidate Donald Trump used the case to call for tougher immigration policies. Garcia Zarate was found guilty of being a felon in possession of firearm. Ref. USAToday.

While I can understand reasonable doubt about Zarate's intention to kill her, I cannot understand why the jury didn't find him guilty of involuntary manslaughter, at least! He shot his illegal gun, she died. Anything else is just fine-tuning the details and motives. IMO, though, if the bullet ricocheted, the angle of entry and path the bullet took would have been far sharper than it was shown to be. The line of trajectory was pretty flat.
He was a known felon in possession of a fire arm illegally. This just shows how well criminals obey the laws. If he did not have a a gun she would be still be alive. No matter how you look at this he killed her with a gun when he should not have had a gun. Leave it to a pro amnesty judge to let him off with a slap on the hand.
