Costa Rica is one of the leaders in pushing for action against climate change. They know that climate change could have a major impact on the environment of Costa Rica, upsetting delicate mountain cloud forests, and causing a decrease in plant and animal species in a region famous for its diverse flora and fauna. Since this diversity is important to its tourism industry, and hence to its economy, they are greatly concerned.

Climate models predict that the area will become warmer and drier due to climate change. This could destroy their forests and wipe out hundreds of species that live in an already fragile ecosystem. At the extreme end, the Costa Rican mountain will become a high mountain desert, like the Arizona in the US.
