I doubt that was a serious plan, it was probably just a speculation made to be a light show and not really to remove the moon from out of its orbit.

I don't get it, what is the "Purpose" of blowing up the moon? It is not like the moon "Did" something bad to our planet. All it does is just give off light as a reflection of the sun to our planet.

The moon is like 3,474 km in diameter so let's say its about the size of Africa and Europe put together. Do we have a bomb that can blow up something that bog, I don't think so. Its just wishful thinking that back then they could even have thought about doing that.
