Elder Holland gave a talk at the Fourth Annual Guardian of the Light Award Dinner of the Lighted Candle Society. He discussed different topics but he centered on Pornography. This is what he said about Myspace.com:

In another study by the Kaiser Foundation, 70 percent of teens aged 15 to 17 said they had accidentally come across pornography on the Web. A survey revealed that, nationally, 5 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 17 using the Internet had received a solicitation for sex in the past year (see The National Academy of Sciences, Youth, Pornography, and the Internet, 2002, 132-33). Since these studies, now dated only by a few years, the problem has become worse. The number of homes with Internet access has increased dramatically, and cell phones and other technology popular with youth can now connect with the Web. Blogs, chat rooms, and community Web sites like Myspace.com have proliferated, along with the potential for contact with online sexual predators. |
I have spoken to parents both inside and outside of the church and the difference is very substantial. It seems that the parents of young people who spend time with their familes in church settings and not -- either with a game night or something similar and know what their young peoples' activities are, do not have the problems that those who do not have this kind of connection. What does this mean? I have seen so much on MySpace that I wish I hadn't seen. Babies -- And I say that because these children cannot be more than 12 in blatantly sexual poses giving so much personal information that anyone with half a brain could find them without so much as a keystroke or three. And I'm not even that technologically gifted. Give a few compliments under the guise of an "Emo" teen boy name and you'd have the girl's life story written out for you! It's criminal! I am so afraid for our young girls. Why isn't there more regulation? Is there more to come? Is there something in the works?
I think what happens is that most adults in the Church think that certain counsels we receive from our leaders apply to our youth only (there is a thread about it). In this case even though Elder Holland is talking about the influence of it on our children, as parents or as adults we should not get involved in these type of things because we know the damage that produces to the Spirit. I think Pornography is the number one problem in the Church nowdays since people are exposed to it even unintentionally. As parents we should carefully monitor the activities of our children on the Internet.
It seems like the issue with Myspace.com is getting into the local settings also, I wonder if the First Presidency would issue an statement specifically warning the Saints against this site?

LDS Leader Cautions Against Using Myspace.com PROVO A Mormon church leader has warned his congregation about using the Internet for social networking. Some Web sites are moral danger zones where young people can be exposed to risque pictures and language, said David Lisonbee, a counselor for a collection of Brigham Young University congregations that are part of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The sites also can be used by sexual predators to trap victims, Lisonbee said. "The biggest concerns we have are on MySpace.com. ... You think you know who you're speaking with, but you don't know for sure," he said... |
This has been going on since the beginning of the internet chat facilities - before the advent of Windows or even AOL! When I got my first computer somewhere back in 1990-something, the first thing that happened when I logged on to my ISP (CompuServe, back then, and it was all plain text, no graphics) I was approached by someone wanting to "hot chat" as they used to call it. Then AOL rolled around, and the same thing happened, and the same thing on Yahoo! and MSN chat where they were calling it cyber-sex. Chat rooms have just evolved into "blogspace" and other forms of social networking, and I don't think Myspace.com should be specifically singled out. This has been going on for a long, long time.
Perhaps the issue with Myspace.com is that a lot of LDS families have been using it; however, it can happen *anywhere* on the internet.
In my opinion, of course.

There are many so called "Mormons" who established so called "LDS Communities" on there, but when you read what they have to say you know for sure that these people do not even know what it means to be a Latter-Day Saint or they were former Members that care nothing. Anyone with half knowledge of the basic doctrines of the Church can clearly see this, BUT if you are a child - you may not. I spend most of my time posting messages to here - a real place to discuss the Doctrine, BUT then again, even Communities like this are generally discourage.
