Is Soccer and Football the Same Thing?
I hear people use them interchangeably, but are they really the same thing, why not use one name?
In the United States, we do use one name, and they aren't interchangable. Soccer is the game that the rest of the world calls football. But in the USA, football is something else entirely, something akin to rugby with pads.
I must say though that since soccer is played with your foot, calling it football makes perfect sense. But I have called it soccer since I was a kid and football is my favorite sport so I wouldn't vote to change it.
Soccer and football should be two different things, but unfortunately, in different parts of the world, they refer to the same sport. I grew up using the word football to represent the game played with your foot and a ball. Now that I live in the US, football is the game where you throw a ball or run with it in your hands, and soccer is the game where you kick the ball. Invariably, I use the word football these days to refer to the two sports, but there are times I need to use the word soccer to differentiate between the two.
