The four acoustic pings at the center of the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 for the past seven weeks are no longer believed to have come from the plane's black boxes, a U.S. Navy official says.
The acknowledgement came Wednesday as searchers wrapped up one phase of the search, CNN's Rene Marsh and Mike Ahlers report. Some 329 square miles of ocean floor were scanned, with no discovery of wreckage from the missing Boeing 777. Ref. CNN
It is "highly, highly likely" That Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was on autopilot when it flew into the southern Indian Ocean, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said Thursday.
He also announced that the search for the missing plane is moving to an area farther south in the southern Indian Ocean.
Flight 370 disappeared over Southeast Asia on March 8, and searchers have so far found no trace of the Boeing 777 or the 239 people aboard, making it one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history. Ref. CNN
