Growing New Bones
What doctors once considered irreparable bone injuries are now treatable through a new stem cell therapy. Orthopedists can now use a patient's own adult stem cells to regenerate damaged bones. In a major show of faith in the therapy, the Pentagon announced today an $85 million grant to fund orthopedic stem cell surgery for servicemen injured in Afghanistan and Iraq. ABC's Juju Chang visits one of the few clinics where doctors are successfully growing new bones.
This is a interesting subject. Are they saying that they can regrow a leg that was blown off by a mine or replace a shattered bone that was hit with shrapnel? If so this is borderline regeneration. If they can get regeneration down then there should be little else they can do. Think of replacing some spinal injuries so paralised people can walk and moe about again.
