SMOKER AT THREE, DRUGGIE BY 12
Michael, 14, cannot remember the exact moment when he had his first cigarette puff, but is fairly confident he was smoking at age three.

I tried to look at the link but it did not work for me. This is such a sad story. If anyone has another link, I would like to read how come a three year old was smoking cigarettes? and became a drug user at age of 12! Where the heck were the parents of this child?
From reading this article, it sounds like the family were too busy drinking, partying, smoking and doing drugs to even be aware of what the children were getting up to.
It was the elder sister who introduced the other children to the cigarettes by handing them a lit cigarette.
How tragic that your children could be using these substances and you are so absorbed in your own substance abuse to even notice or care!
This really is a horrible, sad state of affairs.
It's only if a child has access at that young an age that they will begin using cigarettes. It's not all that difficult to hide that sort of thing from parents who smoke - when a person smokes, they can't smell it on other people. I was 11 when I started smoking, because "everyone" I knew smoked (except for my mother) and it seemed a natural thing to do at the time.
I'm not advocating this, merely stating that it's common enough to occur when the parents smoke. All a kid needs is access and opportunity. It's terrible that it escalated to include everything else the parents were involved in.
In my opinion.
