GEOLOGISTS WATCH BIRTH OF AFRICAN OCEAN
Two of Earth's major tectonic plates, Africa and Arabia, are slowly ripping apart to create a new ocean basin, geologists say.

This is very cool and explains the additional earth quakes in the last several years. A new ocean basin being created is a major change of the earth in our lifetime! I expect that this will eventually cause more volcanoes, earthquakes, and possible tsunami resultant from the tectonic movement. Its really exciting but I hope not to many people are effected by it.
I don't think you'll have to worry about that too much, Konq. It's not happening in our lifetimes - at least not our mortal lives

The plates have been separating for 30 million years. It will take millions more before the rift completely fills with magma, rises and hardens to form a new strip of ocean floor separating much of Ethiopia and Eritrea from the rest of Africa, the researchers said. |
