The "Modern" flag of Greece (I prefer calling my country Hellas, it's closer to the original name) was adopted after the end of Dictatorship (1967-1974). Although it replaced the old ones of the Kingdom of Greece and the one during the Dictatorship years, unofficial, it was used since the 1860s, when the modern Hellenic Nation was founded. The thing that not many people know, even Hellenes, is that our modern flag was taken from the British (Along with our king back in the day). The cross of the flag is the Cross of St. George (Both saint-patron of Hellas and England, among most countries with the cross on their flags) and the same flag was used by the British Empire's East India company during late 17th century. East India's flag was exactly the same in design, even the number of lines, and was used in red and in blue colour (The later years just before the East India company closed).
During the Independence Wars with the Ottoman Empire there were a lot of "Greek" flags, but each one was made by a specific warlord or part of Greece. They are more like coat of arms of small states or personal flags and many of them have a lot of thought and detailing into them. However all of them had the white cross in blue background (Or blue cross in white background) as the main canvas.
