Stupid, Dumb & Idiot
In terms of the actual meaning of "Stupid", "Dumb" and "Idiot" individually the dictionary may be specific or even relate several meanings, but in small talk does referring to a person as "Stupid" differ from if you were to call them "Dumb" or "Idiot"? What is your view?
I know the word 'dumb' used to be used for people with disabilities of any kind way back in the day. People used to believe that just because somebody couldn't hear or talk or had a physical disability, they were intellectually deficient.
In normal conversation, I don't think there really is a specific meaning, but I think there is an order to severity. Calling somebody dumb just doesn't seem to hold the same harshness as calling them an idiot.
Exactly my thought, BabyBlues. It's a matter of degree. Dumb is not as severe as Idiot. My aunt once related that her husband often spoke of other drivers on the road this way: "Dummy" was mild, "Stupid" was moderate, and "Idiot" was bad. But if someone was a "Stupid Idiot!" they had really transgressed
What about retarded? Doctors use this word all the time when they refer to children with development delays. I think it is a very strong word and I do not think it should be used. Look at this example for instance:
Family Upset About Sign In Neighbor's Yard
QUOTE |
A cardboard sign is hanging in a tree, directed at a boy with developmental disabilities, and the boy's mother isn't happy. Neighbor: "I'm not taking the sign down, last night was the first night of peace we've got in a long ----- time." Carrie Heaton, Colton's Mother: "They've put up this sign now, that we feel is very discriminatory against my son." The cardboard sign is hanging in a tree in the Central Utah town of Nephi. It is also being denounced tonight by advocates for the disabled. The boy's family noticed the sign pointed at their home on Wednesday night, and tonight it is still there. That's despite our visit to the neighbors who put it up. Advocates for the disabled are outraged, calling it insensitive and in the same category as a racial slur... |
"Retarded" was used for many, many years before people became more sensitive to the issue. It has now become such a derogatory word that it can't be used anymore as a diagnosis, as evidenced by the negative use of it on this sign.
Offtopic but, Now, if you look very closely, you'll see that the sign doesn't say "retards" it says "retard's" -- which is possessive, not plural. So who's developmentally challenged, hm? |
Offtopic but, Actually, after rethinking that, it could be a contraction of "retard is" in area. But I doubt that's what he meant. |
