I tend to believe that just about anything is possible, at least until I see concrete evidence to the contrary. So yeah, I imagine that it's possible. Probably not a real good idea, leaving your body empty and defenseless like that, who knows what could get in while you were gone.
I cannot help but bring in a little bit of 'religion' here, but as far as I know the spirit with out the body makes the body dead. If there was to be any kind of 'travel' then I think it would have to be a mental projection rather than the actual spirit. After all, we use only 10% or less of our brain.
With the exception of NDE's I can't imagine it is possible to have a true out of body experience. You might get into a state of meditation such that you feel like you are out of your body, but I doubt it is really possible. I believe the body and soul are permanently connected until death. So, no, I don't think one can just will their spirit to leave their body and visit some other place like in ghost form.
Silver Cord
"The silver cord is the interface between the etheric body and the physical body. It essentially allows the etheric body to move outside of the sense dimensions of the physical body during sleep or deep meditation."
"The physical body remains conscious while the silver cord is attached, but once severed there can be no more animation."

In my religion many people say that they are able to partake in astral projection. I personally have not been able to accomplish this task. I know that it does start out with meditation, but since I have never experienced it and I can't seem to relax enough to even meditate I don't know much more about it. I could research the topic for you if you so wished it.
I have a pretty open mind when it comes to subjects such as this. With Astral Travel, I've spoken to many people who claim to have done it. I may have experianced Astral Travel as a child. It's something I've never forgotten, but I can't explain it any other way.
I used to draw myself into such a concentrated state that I'd make myself believe that I wasn't real. It'd usually occur just before I'd go to sleep. I'd relax my body and just start telling myself that I wasn't real. I'd end up feeling really dizzy and I'd literally look at my hand or look at an object and it wouldn't look real.... it was the weirdest feeling ever. But I guess that's why I used to do it.
