I just do not believe LDS doctrine allows for God to create matter without preexistent elements (Creating matter out of nothing).
According to LDS doctrine the elements are eternal (Doctrine and Covenants 93:33), and God must use these elements in creating Matter.
Joseph Smith explained this from the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 158

I do not think there is a more concise explanation on the fact that matter (Earth Water Etc.) could not be created from nothing.

I think the definition of Nothing is the absence of matter. Since spirits have matter according to Joseph Smith, then they cannot, by definition be nothing.
