but at least she can distinguish reality from her ordeal.

To what extend? She weighs less than she did when she was ten, she was living in a dungeon for eight years and she says it was her room and had everything she needed and that it is not true that it was a tiny place. She does not seem to know the depht of what she went through.

I should clarify that what I mean is she understands that she was held captive and not merely on vacation / holiday or with a relative.

My heart just aches for her -- but maybe especially for her parents. They have a long road ahead of them, adjusting to the different forms of grief - first complete disappearance, and now the knowledge that all this time she was alive and tortured. That now she is psychologically unstable, and I read she doesn't want too much interaction with her parents. How do they keep sane, themselves?

Yes, she said she wants to keep in touch with them only by phone for now. You see, eight years ago when they kidnapped her she was running away from home because her parents were having a fight. Then after her disappearance they went through a bitter divorce, each one of them blaming each other for what happened.

The past comes to the present...it is not an easy time for anyone.

Wow, this story will be a movie for sure. Sometimes I look at these situations and think to myself JB you have no problems in life, just look at this person. Stories like this also remind me how important it is to always leave family members on a good note as you can never know when you will see them again.

To see a picture of the room where she stayed:

This is really terrible, I don't think that anybody could really ever fully recover from something like this.
It sounds like her abuser took the easy option out, once the girl had escaped, because he knew full well that his arrest would probably be imminent.

I feel so sorry for this girl and her family, I would think that she will probably end up changing her identity, it can't be easy with the whole world knowing her identity, and guessing and talking about the abuse that she has suffered.
