Do you think the managers were just kidding (bad and tasteless joke) or do you really think it was a racist and ugly statement?

NEW YORK (CNN) -- James Jackson, a 26-year-old black employee of 180 Connect, was preparing for another day of installing cable, telephone and Internet service to residential customers of Cablevision in Nassau County, New York on December 7. When he walked to the fenced-off area to pick up equipment for the day's jobs he looked up and was shocked to see a vicious, racist symbol in his workplace. A noose was hanging in the fenced-off equipment area, visible to the dozens of installers, the majority of whom are black, but accessible only to his boss and an equipment manager, both of whom are white. Jackson, a former messenger who had worked at 180 Connect for a year and a half, immediately confronted the equipment manager, Dave Willie. "I asked Dave," Jackson told CNN, " 'What is that hanging up there?' and he said, 'That is a noose' and I said, 'I know it's a noose, but why is it up there?' And he walked away." Jackson and his co-workers say they were distraught. "I just wanted to leave. I wanted to get out of there," 180 Connect employee Ralph Satterwhite told CNN. "I was disgusted." The installers say they never complained to Human Resources. Instead, they consulted with a labor attorney, documented the incident, and decided to file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Installer Shomari Houston, according to the complaint, says he asked his white boss, Gary Murdock, why a hangman's noose was in his workplace. He says the response was: To hang two black employees. "He said, 'Yo, I like that, it's cool, I am gonna hang Russell up there. Think we can get James up there?' " Houston recalls Murdock saying. "I looked at him like, 'You serious.' " Jackson says he continued to ask that the noose be taken down, and openly recorded the following conversation with Willie. Jackson: "Who's that for, the rope?" Willie: "For anybody who goes past that door that I don't want them in there." Jackson: "Hang 'em?" Willie: "Yeah.".. |

Since I have been sent overseas to some of our non-domestic locations (mostly in Asia), I have been a observer and recipient of racism on nearly a daily basis. The only thing is that we call it "cultural differences" here.
While working in these foreign lands, it doesn't seem to matter how much effort I put into my job, there are some positions I will not be allowed to hold. The reason is my race. This was particularly evident in Japan. I noticed that I was always put in charge of young people that have recieved some education overseas. When positions opened up that would allow me to move up, it became a obvious that a major consideration was who would I be in charge of and were they "traditional" Japanese. I later had this confirmed by a co-worker. The Japanese really aren't much into confrontation and discussion, so it is more like silent racism...but none the less racism.
Rather off topic, but... A bit off topic, but pretty interesting was the first apartment that I wanted to rent. I was turned down because I wasn't Japanese! |

The interesting thing about this case is that one of the managers was married an African American lady for 13 years and gives this an excuse that he is not racist, people just do not understand that racist jokes come from racist people, if you participate on them, you are as bad as the others. What they did with the noose is totally unacceptable, cruel, hateful...How in the world they can think their black workers can feel amused by it?

You are assuming that they give their fellow workers any consideration. It is not about how others or even the targets feel about their comments or displays, it is about how they themselves feel about it. For them, it is a cheap laugh that makes them feel superior. Being a racist is all about power and who has it at the time.
Now the thing in this case is that if he really has witnesses or other evidence it happened, he has a fantastic case for harassment or descrimination in that workplace. I am not one for a lot of litigation, but this guy could get some serious payback that not even a OJ Simpson jury would let the company walkout on paying.

I feel that racism is unacceptable. After hearing two coworkers tell me about a Hispanic employee who can not speak English I became furious with what I heard happened. Now because I have no evidence and did not witness the said occurrence I can not do anything about it. But let me just tell everyone what I heard happened.
I am a supervisor, not the highest on the totem pole but not the lowest. I was working last night and one of my checking clerks told me that a lady (I don't want to use names) that works in the dairy department, had a customer throw produce at her and tell her that if she can't speak English then she needs to go back to her own country. I had heard that the store director (Top guy of the totem pole) had witnessed this and did nothing.
I was later told by another coworker that she had overheard the new grocery manager and the produce manager (Higher on the totem pole then myself) talking about the said victim. They apparently said that they should fire her the next time she cries over such an incident. Not necessarily in those exact words, but you get the point.
Needless to say I was appalled. I quickly put my voice recorder on a shortcut on my phone, so that in the event I hear or come to witness such talk or actions I can record it as evidence. I am completely livid.
I can not believe people would be so harsh or uncaring. If the store did not want someone who did not speak English to work there why was she hired? (Not that it makes it right in any case) To hire someone and then be tolerant of customers racism toward the employee is completely mind boggling to me.
In the event that I can find evidence I will be reporting it to human resources, in the event that nothing is done about it I will find any means to gain publicity to shame the company into action at the risk of my own employment.
My heart hurts with such unwarranted hate that seems to be so acceptable. I don't care what race or ethnicity you are, we are all human beings. Everyone bleeds the same, everyone hurts the same. What does is matter what language you speak, or what the color of your skin is? Such reckless hatred is why this world is so ugly. I just don't understand it. I love everyone, (I may not like everyone) I feel that if everyone treated their neighbors with respect and love this world would be a much better place. I apologize for my rambling, but this is a subject that I will never understand.

Good for you! Not many will take such a stance since it is so easy to just fit in with what everyone else is doing. The workplace, race or not, is such a volatile place because everyone is trying to go up the ladder. Race is just one other hurt card people use to put others down so they can climb to the top.
