FIRST ARAB NOBEL WINNER IN LITERATURE DIES AT 94
Naguib Mahfouz, who became the first Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novels depicting Egyptian life in his beloved corner of ancient Cairo, died Wednesday, his doctor said. He was 94.

It is hard in the middle east to take an unpopular stand, but he has done that his entire life. He was accused of blasphemy and being a lover of Israel, yet in the end, he still wrote what he felt and believed. His books are less works of fiction, but thinly disguised virtues attained during his life, those stories were about him.
