Just horrific! I don't get why they got only 24 years in prison, they should have gotten the death penalty!

I do not understand this at all. As a maid do you not have access to food and can feed yourself? And if you do not have access to food how can another human knowingly starve another human. I guess I am too kind and will feed most people that come into my house.
This is awful. That poor woman. I hope that was 24 years each and not between the two of them. I don't understand humans. How could they do that to another human being?

If you read the full article you would notice that the judge felt necessary to remind to everybody not to torture or abuse their maid. May look strange, but is a common warning in Malaysia: something similar to what our governments do with the campaigns against driving under the effect of alcohol.
Abusing the foreign maids is sadly a common practice in that country. Due to the vicinity of the two nations, many poor Indonesians try their luck in the near and richer Malaysia working as maids or babysitters. Everyday you can see in the news here stories like that: I dare say this one was still lucky. Often, maids are burnt with acids or beaten to death or tortured in the most brutal ways. I remember of one that was ironed (with a hot iron for clothes) all over her body, including her face, and left on the floor until dead. The worse part is that justice there not always gets an interest on these cases: specially when the authors are rich or influential people, everything is put under silence.
In this case, the guilty couple is Chinese so they made it to the courthouse. But, if they were locals, we would probably never hear about the sad fate of this Cambodian girl.
