Whether your kid is on meds or not : Would you consider Homeopathy?
QUOTE |
Clinicians using homeopathy for ADHD have reported good results, but objective evidence has been lacking. Now, a double blind, placebo-controlled study of 43 children with ADHD shows that homeopathy can be effective in treating the disorder. In a study published in the British Homeopathic Journal, Oct 1997, children afflicted with ADHD were given either a homeopathic treatment or a placebo for ten days, then parents or caregivers rated the children on the amount of ADHD behavior they displayed. Those receiving homeopathic medicines showed significantly less ADHD behavior than those given placebos. When evaluated in a follow-up interview two months after the study's end, 57% of the children showing improvement with homeopathy had continued to improve, even though they had discontinued the homeopathic medicines; twenty-four percent relapsed by the time of the follow-up; and the remaining 19% continued to experience positive results, but only while taking the homeopathic medicines. |
My youngest son is in the middle of ADD testing because he shows classic signs of having it. I would consider homeopathy treatments before ever trying prescribed meds. I think children like him are over prescribed medicines that they may or may not really need. I would like to try other avenues that are less invasive and personality warping.
I took my daughter to see a homeopathic practitioner last week, for the first time.
For me personally, I felt that we had nothing to lose, but everything to gain.
To be honest though, when I first heard of this type of treatment through a friend, I was a slight bit sceptical, but now after looking into it, feel that it can be very beneficial.
Whilst I was waiting for her appointment, I happened to see a study programme on tv, where kids with ADHD, had been on trials of taking omega 3 and omega 6, combined with a multi vitamin tablet. At the end of the 3 month trial, 90% of the children had improved tremendously, so I also started my daughter on this combination, as it was supposed to help with concentration and eye and brain co-ordination. In the past, I've always put my eldest Son on this combination 3 months before any major school exam, and as I have become more convinced of it working, I now have all 3 of my kids on it daily.--There are no side effects, and it's safe I would say as long as you don't have any allergies to fish!
What I particularly like about the homeopathic treatment, is that I can continue to use the above, whilst also letting her take the homeopathic treatment.
Homeopathic treatment, as I understand it,for this type of treatment isn't a quick fix, and therefore, you'd have to be prepared for an ongoing treatment.
The first appointment took 2 hours, as the practitioner has to know practically everything there is to know about their eating habits, sleeping habits, behavior traits, in other words, a really deep insight into the person, even asking whether she had ever had cradle cap!
I was told that when you go in, there are a possible 4,500 treatments out there, and as you answer more and more questions, they are able to narrow it down and down by method of elimination, until they maybe get it to 2 or 3, then more questions are asked in order to 'fine tune' exactly which treatment is needed by you, and this is why the initial consultation takes so long.
The subsequent visits should take less than a half hour.
At the moment my daughter isn't getting any of those treatments listed in this article, as she has got to get help for loss, separation and grieving before she can move forward, but sometimes you are started off on one type for a while before you are changed to another.
An immediate thing that I did notice was that the first day, she was so happy, and had loads of extra energy, which although she normally has quite a lot of energy, she doesn't tend to show her emotions, so this was quite different for her.
I would recommend it worth trying, I feel confident that in the long term, this is going to help her.
A couple of things I would like to get feedback from. I read this case about this kid with PDD that the description fits almost like my son. He was treated with some sort of "chocolate" shots through Homeopathy treatment. Did you ever heard of the "chocolate" treatment for children who have hyperactivity issues?
Here is a link on the story:

Also, I heard Herbs are pretty good as a Homeopathic treatment for the same symptoms, did you ever try it? How is your experience with herbs?
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
Brahmi (Bacopa monniera)
Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosis)
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica, also Hydrocotyle asiatica)
Green Oats (Avena sativa)
I also added fish oil to his diet (Seven Seas) He hates it but I read the benefits are great.
You can get the fish oil in caplets, instead of liquid in a bottle, and it's much easier to take. Castor oil, omega 3, omega 6, and even flax seed oil can all be found in gel caps. This is the first I've heard about benefits for PDD, ADD, etc., but it makes sense.
Sorry LDS, I can't help you with that one, as I haven't heard of 'chocolate shots' before, and we haven't tried any of the homeopathic medicine that you have listed.
My daughter has had some very good results on the one that she was prescribed though, and I just wanted to share with you, and give you some encouragement in that I am totally convinced that there has been massive improvements since starting with her homeopathic remedy.
Firstly, she no longer laughs hysterically, but is still laughing, but more to a balanced behavior. She no longer talks to inanimate objects, her concentration is good... for example she has managed to do everything that has been requested of her in her swim lesson for the first time ever.
Most significantly, she is happier, her aggression has subsided, and she has become quite loving, all good signs so far!
Regarding the fish oil, as Farseer said, they are available in caplets, and also citrus flavored liquid...all 3 of my kids have a different type that all do the same job,.. my eldest has a caplet, my daughter prefers the citrus liquid, and my youngest son has strawberry flavored chewy caplet, but at least there are no arguments and they all know which one belongs to each other.
I hope you get the information you are looking for, I would definitely recommend looking into the homeopathic route, I'm considering taking my youngest to see if he can get any help through homeopathy, because I'm so impressed in the vast improvement that I have seen in the last few weeks.
I recently saw the documentary from the UK about the kids taking Omega 3 through cod liver oil gel caps in order to stimulate them to learn, especially the children that could not concentrate. I noticed they gave them six tablets a day, but they did not say what the dosage was - any ideas?
Will this really stimulate a hyper child to be interested in slowing down to learn?
