Deliver Us from Evil

What do you think about the documentary, 'Deliver Us from Evil'?

Moving from one parish to another in Northern California during the 1970s, Father Oliver O'Grady quickly won each congregation's trust and respect...

Much like anything else in the 'historical documentation' genre, documentaries are a reflection of the writer and/or director's opinions. Do you believe for one minute Brandon, that "Farenheit 911" was an unbiased piece of work? I am not an American, yet watching it, I was able to see contradictions within the film and a downright obvious slant.

This film, feeding off a highly publicized controversy, is obviously bound to be biased, and show only the parts of the argument which supports it's claim to a paycheck at the end of a day... because let's face it, only one side of the argument will be a box-office draw.

True, but let's not forget that even though Amy Berg may try to be biased and show only the parts of arguments which supports her claim, nobody can change that this is a true story with a real Priest, his own chilling account about it and the ones of the victims. She may try to emphasy that, but cannot change the fact that the Priest was/is a Pedophile. sad.gif

Regardless of the bias involved in the film, I think this is just 'another big stick to beat' the Catholic church with. I mean, it is no secret that a small minority of priests have been paedophiles. To watch the hysteria generated by the media you would think it was every priest or that somehow by some strange twist of fate or whatever that priests are more susceptible to being paedophiles. I think a lot of people are missing a very important point about paedophilia.... it transcends all of societal boundaries, who knows, the next one to be unmasked near you may be your doctor, lawyer, politician.....

If it were a documentary on a pedophile school teacher, do you suppose it would have quite such a worldwide appeal and/or shock value?

Quite simply, no it wouldn't. Not because it's never happened, nor because it's never happened and been hushed up by school administrations... but because this is a religious attack, it is far juicier in entertainment value.

Of course not, I suppose the reason for it is not only the fact that he was a Priest and made religious vows and kept a "normal" life while engaging on these horrendous crimes but the fact that he actually confessed the crimes in detail and many other Priests knew about it, yet they ignored it. No difference from any other leader of ANY Church and there are many out there!

I would understand the concept of an attack if it was not true but the fact that it is true as we all know it, then how can it be considered an attack?
