Why is no drinking of beers, wine or liquor so important to Mormons?

Mormons stress the laws and creeds of God, but do not be mistaken for Christians too are urged not to drink.

God gave us a revelation wherein He told us that, "In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation-" (D&C 89:4)

So, this revelation, known as the "Word of Wisdom", gives us advice concerning our physical health. Among this advice is the following, "5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.

7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies. (D&C 89:5-7)

Eventually, the Latter-day Saints, in a General Conference, agreed to accept and use this Word of Wisdom as a commandment from God, entering into a covenant to do so.

So, I am a little confused. Is it nothing alcoholic period, or alcohol only in moderation? Or is that dependent on who you talk to?

No alcohol period.

I suppose like any other religion, there are people who follow their beliefs and others who struggle with it.

It is nothing alcoholic, period. In fact, Mormons no longer use wine in the sacrament (communion) either, also due to revelation from God.

Even though there are arguments claiming that alcohol in small amounts could be healthy, the word of wisdom is also meant to benefit the weakest among all saints. There are those who are more likely to become alcoholics...

QUOTE
D&C 89:3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.

Just my 2 cents...

So, basically, because there would be those that could not handle even small quantities, and who would easily become addicted, no one should drink alcohol, right?
