HAFEE BEATS BACK CONSERVATIVE CHALLENGER
Moderate Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, who has bucked President Bush on tax cuts and the war in Iraq, defeated a conservative challenger Tuesday in a contest crucial to the larger fight for control of Congress.

Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee announces he is entering the presidential race, becoming the third Democratic challenger to Hillary Clinton.
Chafee, a former Republican and former senator, has been differentiating himself from fellow Democratic contenders by taking jabs at Clinton over her vote in Congress to authorize the war in Iraq. Ref. CNN
Democrat Lincoln Chafee drops out of presidential race
The former Rhode Island governor also served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican. Like his father, Lincoln Chafee was known as one of the more moderate members of the Senate Republican Conference. The year after his defeat in 2006, he left the GOP and ran in 2010 for governor as an independent. In 2013, after having endorsed President Obama in 2008 and 2012, he announced he was joining the Democratic Party. There are three Democrats left in the race for 2016. Ref. USAToday
