Soap Operas

I was just wondering if anyone watches "The soaps" As we call the daytime dramas in the states. I usually watch "The Young and The Restless" And "One Life to Live". I have often wondered what kind of "Soaps" There are in other countries. I know that England has "Coronation Street" And "Eastenders", which my husband used to watch, but that's the only ones I know about. I only watch the ones I do because my Mom loves them (She lives with us) and it's one of the few pleasures she can still enjoy. I get mad at the shows because they will take a story and drag it out for months and months, till you're ready to pull your hair out. I am curious to know if soaps in other places do this too? Also are our soaps imported to other countries? Please let me know what you think of soaps, either US ones or from anywhere. Thanks. smile.gif

Operas Soap

My wife is a big Soap Opera fan, Renee, so inadvertently I end up watching some of them with her. She enjoys, One Life to Live, General Hospital and All my Children. Most of the time I am rolling my eyes either because of the over dramatic actors or the unbelievable and impossible story lines. For example, people who die, and return the next season. Or someone falling off a cliff and getting amnesia.
When I lived in Trinidad, I know that a lot of the American soaps were shown over there. My aunts loved Santa Barbara and The Bold and the Beautiful. Also The Young and the Restless. In Trinidad, they didn't have any local soaps, at least none that I was aware of or remember.

I really can't understand how can anyone watch these kind of TV shows (no offence). I find them a pure waist of time. This goes also for those south-american soaps too.

I would also like to follow in agreement with Raul, but add that my reason goes beyond it simply being a waste of time and say that the acting is terrible, the backgrounds fake and the plot continuously the same. I believe soaps had their grand days with shows like 'General Hospital' and 'The Young & The Restless', but now they are like a stuck record playing the same tune.

I agree with you JB. I have to say though that I have never liked soaps, eve after the romanian revolution when we could start to watch these kind of shows (before that there was nothing worth watching on the TV except the dictators speeches). Back then, I was mostly bothered by the lack of action ... they moved a bottle of wine from one room to the other over 3-4 episodes. wink.gif

How to kill off a soap star

Daytime television is a ruthless business. Just ask Days of Our Lives character Tommy Horton who, in 1980, went up to the attic to retrieve his skis and never returned. Ref. Source 7
