I cannot do this, but I have family who make up for my lack in ability

I don't think it is devious as long as the end result is in the other persons best interest, but if you are using it as a tool to manipulate another person for own gain, then it is very wrong in my opinion.

My ex boss used to be very good at this too, but only used it for the wrong reasons, to make you feel that an idea or suggestion had come from you, when plainly it hadn't.
It took me a long time to realize what he was doing, and now I am more wary of people making suggestions, or steering a conversation.

Suggestion Power

I was not blessed with that ability. I have tried this several times and was only successful once. I suppose if I had this "gift," I would slowly become corrupted. However, like DianeC, I have been a victim of people using the power of suggestion on me, without even realising it. My mother was the one to always point it out to me! Well I guess mothers were born with that natural maternal instinct to protect their young! Unfortunately, people exploit others for their personal gain and that is wrong! But as Roz mentioned, as long as it benefits others in a positive manner, then and only then, it is acceptable.
