Questions

I have a few questions that came up during my Old Testament class. I have acess to a lot of matieral here at BYU-Idaho but cant really find what I am looking for. And I have never gotten what I want by searching for it on the net I always get something that has nothing to do with my questions.

First, Moses casts out Satan in Moses 1 12-22. He commands Satan 3 times to leave, Satan got really mad but still did not leave. Moses finally commanded Satan "in the name of the only begotten" to depart and Satan complied. I have heard from people that Satan must leave if you tell him to in the name of Jesus Christ. I have also heard a similar thing but it has more to do with the priesthood. That we as priesthood holders have the power to cast out Satan. So I want to know what is the doctrine on that? I want specific references no "I once heard the prophet say...." The question in class was if you need the power of the priesthood to cast out Satan. But I want to know if somewhere it is taught how to cast out satan and the way to do it. Does it require the priesthood?

Second also having to to with that same part of scripture

As Moses is unsuccessfully trying to cast out Satan in verse 21 he mentions that the earth shook as satan resisted the rebuke. Is the shaking of the earth a result of satan's power? In Mosiah 27:18 an angel appears and the earth shakes, it says that the people knew that it was from God because "nothing save the power of God that could shake the earth" Was it a fight between God and Satan?

Thirdly as class closed the topic of Satan having control over the water came up. Some people gave a few good arguments. If satan has control over the water then how did Moses part the Red Sea? Jesus command the water to be calm, water to wine, and so on. I didn't get a chance to research this one too well but basically I want to know if there are documents or talks that specifically talk about this.

My main reason for coming here was to get references to the doctrine. Please if you can give me a reference to a talk or a book by General Authorities. And of course scripture. Things like the missionary pal are good sources too.

Yes, this is specifically taught in the Temple, and as you well know, we are not allowed to discuss the things we learn there.

Now, with regards to your second question..let's analyze the scripture you provide in Moses:

QUOTE
21 And now Satan began to tremble, and the earth shook; and Moses received strength, and called upon God, saying: In the name of the Only Begotten, depart hence, Satan.

Did you notice that right after it says that the earth shook, Moses received strength? It is clear to me (and this is my personal view)that God caused the earth to shake, gave strength to Moses and he went and cast out Satan.

Lastly, with regards of Satan ruling over the waters, the answer you are looking for is in Doctrine and Covenants 61, let me just highlight some verses:

QUOTE
13 And now, behold, for your agood I gave unto you a bcommandment concerning these things; and I, the Lord, will reason with you as with men in days of old.
14 Behold, I, the Lord, in the beginning blessed the waters; but in the last days, by the mouth of my servant John, I cursed the waters.
15 Wherefore, the days will come that no flesh shall be safe upon the waters.

16 And it shall be said in days to come that none is able to go up to the land of Zion upon the waters, but he that is upright in heart.
17 And, as I, the Lord, in the beginning cursed the land, even so in the last days have I blessed it, in its time, for the use of my saints, that they may partake the fatness thereof.
18 And now I give unto you a commandment that what I say unto one I say unto all, that you shall forewarn your brethren concerning these waters, that they come not in journeying upon them, lest their faith fail and they are caught in snares;
19 I, the Lord, have decreed, and the destroyer rideth upon the face thereof, and I revoke not the decree.

Hope it helps,
LDS
