Anti-Mormon - Page 2

Michael I will have to disagree with Joseph Smith then. I think there is a lot of room for neutrality in any religion and certainly the LDS Church isn't the exception. I'm neutral about a lot of topics we have been taught such as the location of the garden of Eden here in the United States, the Priesthood ban, plural marriage and so forth. Doesn't make me anti-mormon, it makes me HUMAN.

Comments: I would be very careful about disagreeing with a prophet of God, especially one who was as close to the Spirit of God as the Prophet Joseph Smith was. A prophet is the mouthpiece of God. Hence, when you disagree with a prophet of God, you disagree with God. That is not a desirable position. To disagree with God is the height of arrogance, and that is what got Lucifer into trouble in the preexistence.

In saying this, I am not maintaing that prophets are either perfect or infallible, but they are right far more often than most people realize, and in this case discretion is the better part of valor.

The prophet Joseph Smith was not talking about this or that particular tenet. He was talking about the Church. When you accept the gospel and join the Church, you can never again get back onto neutral ground with respect to the Church. If you retain your testimony, then you will stay in the Church. If you decide to leave the Church, it will be because you feel that it is not the true Church. Where is there room for neutrality there? Either the Church is true, or it is false. There is no middle ground.

I agree with Joseph Smith but can the poster who brought this up post the exact quotation? Otherwise it just becomes a rumor.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints it's the only true Church upon the face of the Earth. You cannot disagree with a Prophet of God and remain without sin. God communicates with them directly as Michael said and I think it's very disrespectful and disturbing that some members think they can pick and choose what to believe. It is a dangerous road to follow and one that can lead you to excommunication.

international QUOTE
"Brother Behunnin remarked, 'If I should leave this Church, I would not do as those men have done. I would go to some remote place where Mormonism had never been heard of, and no one would ever learn that I knew anything about it.'

"The great Seer immediately replied: 'Brother Behunnin, you don't know what you would do. No doubt those men once thought as you do. Before you joined this Church you stood on neutral ground. When the gospel was preach, good and evil were set before you. You could choose either or neither. There were two opposite masters inviting you to serve them. When you joined this Church you enlisted to serve God. When you did that, you left neutral ground, and you never can get back on to it. Should you forsake the Master you enlisted to serve, it will be by the instigation of the evil one, and you will follow his dictation and be his servant.'"

(Daniel Tyler, quoted in Hyrum L. And Helen Mae Andrus, They Knew the Prophet, p. 54.)

It seems odd to me that anyone should require the actual quote on this point. The principle seems so obvious as to be self-evident. When you join the Church, it is because you have a testimony that it is the true Church. If you ever leave this Church, it will be because you have concluded that it is false. There is no way that you can be neutral on that point. Either it is true, or it is false. There is no in between. You can not be neutral after once accepting the Gospel.

It seems odd that we require a prophet of God to point out the obvious to us.

I don't know what exactly I should be careful about. If prophets aren't infallible then there is a lot of things they can say that not necessarily is doctrinal and that's why I don't believe in being a blind follower but let the Spirit guide my actions. I am neutral in a lot of topics because I do not receive the answer for many of them and in some cases I don't think I will ever do in this life, neutral doesn't mean against...many times it means in the "Waiting" period.

How do you deal with Anti-Mormons in general? Do you usually take your time and try to debate or totally ignore them?

I will take my time and debate with them, I generally wear them out. If they get rude and disrespectful I will ignore them.
