Are Philosophy & Politics closely related?

Politics and Philosophy

Peoples political views are often based on their life philosophy. Philosophy is related closely with religion and with politics as well. Unlike the improper mix of religion and politics, philosophy is rarely set and encourages different patterns of thought and new ideas. Philosophy can and does have a profound ideological impact on politics, especially when politics begins to change and become something different. Just look at how much such things like democracy and socialism have changed over the years.

I think that a person's or culture's core philosophies greatly affect their political views.

For example, in cultures where a very authoritarian culture (and religion) is dominant, it is very easy for dictators to gain power. The people tend to accept the strong authoritarian actions.

On the other hand, in those cultures where individualism is predominant, dictators don't have much chance. Everyone is ready and willing to criticize their leaders, vote in those with opposing philosophies, and even "turn the b******s out" if it gets bad enough. (By the way, that is an actual quote, I just don't know who first said it!)

I disagree with konq though, because I think that religion is extremely valid as a foundation for philosophy and political views. In fact, I would go so far as to say that most people have their philosophical views most strongly shaped by their religious beliefs.
