Football: The Offside Rule

Are you for or against the offside rule where if the player does not have the ball or opponent ahead of him then he is considered 'off the side' and must surrender the ball. Many games have become very controversial because of this rule.

Alright, my kind of topic here smile.gif I am completely for the offside rule. It prevents what is referred to as 'loafing' around the box, and forces offenses to not rely on the long ball when attacking. It can be controversial, yes, but without it, defenses will not have a prayer, and teams that have speed and that can pass the ball a long way up the field will be at an advantage every time. The offside rule may be tweaked in years to come, but I can't see it ever being banished from the game. Good topic JB!

Well I can see the good side of it as you mentioned, but sometimes it is just crazy. There should be a modification to it that allows for a certain number of feet/yards of the ball or player.

That would be way too difficult to enforce with the naked eye. It is bad enough as it is where refs have to make the split decision call, much less having to worry about whether they were 5 or 6 yards offside.

That is actually another issue I have... why not bring in the cameras as they do in cricket to make a decision - again so many games could have gone the 'correct' way had the players been given a fair chance.

Well then maybe a time system like they do in basketball where if the player is in the penalty are for more than 'x' time then...

Good idea, but it takes away from the purity of the game. However, most sports are realizing there is merit in using 'instant replay' and so it may be time for football to do the same.

Things happen too quickly in soccer for this to help, and a goal is much more valuable than say a field goal in basketball. Yes, every field goal counts, but with a game where scores can reach triple digits, vs a sport where 1 goal is the difference between a win and a loss, there is no time that can be allowed for offside where it takes a few seconds, if in the right position, to score a goal. Call me pessimistic, but I honestly believe the offside rule is at its maximum usage, and unless it is removed or replaced, leave it be.

In my humble opinion of course smile.gif

I think it does all the opposite. After all, if you accuse a player of doing something he did not, or take away a goal that was made legit then it is by all means making the sport sour.

Okay Mr. Pessimistic, wink.gif tell me how you think there will be an 'upgrade' to the offside rule in the future as you previously mentioned?

Wow, I feel like a politician who is having his words thrown back at him. wink.gif What I meant to say is that FIFA may try to change the offside rule in ways similar to what you have mentioned. Am I for these changes? No, I am not. Will the changes probably happen? Probably, which is why I made that statement. And if you read my statement, it states 'may' which leaves the door open a bit, but not all the way.
