Genetic Addiction
Can someone be Addicted to a Substance because their parents were also Addicted to that same Substance?
I have heard that this is true. I have been told that my genes are indicative of a predisposal to have addictions. I have also been told, by my brothers psychiatrist, that my personality makes it difficult for my to get addicted because I won't let any think have control over my mind. I was young then, but I understand now. I can drink, or smoke, or do pretty much anything not physically addicting and just stop when ever I want, and have done so often in the past. I quit smoking after eight years, started again after three years, quit again for a year, smoked for a couple months or so, then just quit again. I did it cold turkey and had few cravings even though smoking is physically addicting. This makes me wonder just how much of a role genetics really play, or is it more of a psychological issue as opposed to genetics?
