Nearly four out of five Americans say Congress should authorize President Obama to fight ISIS, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.
The survey also found an uptick in support for U.S. Ground troops, to 47%, even as a larger number of Americans -- 57% -- disapprove of how Obama is handling the threat posed by ISIS.
The poll was conducted after Obama last week sent lawmakers a draft resolution that would formally authorize the already 6-month-old U.S. Military effort against the militant group. Ref. CNN
ISIS fighters have launched a major assault on Kurdish positions southwest of Irbil, Iraq, according to Kurdish officials.
Fighting at close quarters was continuing some time after the first ISIS assault was launched at about 9 p.m. (1 p.m. ET), officials said. One Kurdish official said ISIS attacked from several directions. Coalition aircraft are in the area, according to the officials, but have been unable to fire on ISIS units because of the close proximity of the two sides on the ground.
A CNN team recently in the area was told by fighters that ISIS was making almost daily attempts to infiltrate Kurdish lines. Ref. CNN
