What to say? The active members of this community already know my position in regard of the free distribution of firearms. I'm totally against it and this episode is just one of the proofs that there might be some reasoning in my attitude.
Defenders of the "Far West" Weapon policy will reply that many tools that we use daily can become lethal in the hands of a child and they are absolutely right. But, still, a tool is a tool while a weapon is an object intentionally created for killing humans. Putting the two on the same level is like justifying bacteriological attacks saying that the people infected by them would have probably got flu during winter anyway.
I met many strange people in my life. One of them was a friend with an unusual hobby: on weekends he loved to go in the countryside to shoot at wild boars and, sometimes, road signs using always illegally detained guns (his favorite was a huge pistol made in Israel). One of his favorite lines has always been: "Remember that having a gun and not being more than ready to use it is worse than not having it at all. If somebody gets in your house and you are not armed, they will probably tie you up and rob you. But if you have a gun in your hand they will shoot you. And, most of the times, you will not even need to have it in hand to be shot. So, if you want a gun you have to kill".
Thanks to him I abandoned any desire of possessing a gun because I saw the truth in his words. Weapon nuts, those that consider them absolutely necessary for personal protection, should try to live in a different Country for some time. One in which weapons are illegal (ie: any Country in the World apart from the US (laugh)). I'm sure those people will realize how wonderful it is to walk on the streets, drive your car or do anything you want to do knowing that, even if you show your middle finger to somebody, the worst you will get is a black eye. And you will live another day to learn about how to be more patient and polite.

10-year-old playing with gun fatally shot
SAN DIEGO A 10-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the chest Tuesday afternoon at a Miramar Ranch condominium complex while playing in a garage that a neighbor described as a "clubhouse" ... Ref. Source 9
As a gun owner I find it hard at times to see stories like this. Responsible gun owners should have their guns locked up or disabled to where a child can not shot themselves. I have raised five children with guns in my house and none of my children or their friends have come into my house and played with or even tried to handle any of my guns without me being there to talk to them about gun safety and how to handle a gun. I have educated them that a gun is not a toy but a instrument for death.
I believe more families need to educate their children or not have a gun at all if they can not keep a child safe. I have my guns disabled at home so even if my kids did find the keys to the locks they can not accidently shoot themselves or their friends.
People show kids violent movies with guns, gun toys, gun games and then when its time to hold a real gun they say "No", kids don't understand that, that's why we read about these cases.

KNtoran, I have a question. If your guns are all disabled and locked up, why having them at all? If somebody got into your house at night you would not have the time to retrieve them, load them and use them to defend yourself. So, what for? It would not be better to make them illegal and avoid a lot of problems?
I'm not from "Paradise Country". I'm from Italy: Mafia, criminality and add whatever you want to the list. But in my Country firearms are illegal so if you own one you are either a cop or a criminal (but a big one because petty criminals don't have access to guns). In Italy, every day, we have a lot of murders and robberies and any kind of bad action but:
1- Nobody dies for accidental shots.
2- No child ever have the chance to play with weapons (a parent doesn't need to explain to children that a gun is an instrument of death, like you said. No need at all. For our children, is just a plastic toy and that's it!).
3- We don't live in a terror state, like kill or be killed.
I want to ask again: is it so necessary to have a gun? Can you call "Civilization" A situation in which everybody needs "Instruments of death" To feel safe?

Mandy I agree with you to a point. My kids did not play with guns while they grew up. I did not allow them violent video games until they where in high school. This is why I educated them to the real dangers of guns.
Bruconero, I only have my guns locked up and disabled when I am not at home or the guns are not with me. When I am home or when the gun is on my person it is fulled armed and ready for use. I do not always have my rifle me so it remains disabled more often than not. I carry a handgun with me 98% of the time. To answer some of your questions I can say I have lived in other countries that did not allow gun ownership and I still saw death from other weapons. IF a person is going to want to kill you they will.
I do not walk around in fear for my life as even though there are guns allowed in the USA people do not go around shooting all the time. The country is peaceful and people do not live in fear of being shot because they walked out their door. Most of the guns owned by responsible gun owners never make the news because they are properly cared for and kept away from kids and those who would use them wrong. I have carried a gun as Military police officer and then as a security officer most of my adult life. I have taught my kids to be responsible with guns if they decide to ever own one themselves. It is through education that lives are saved by guns and having a gun in my house makes my property and the property around my home a lot safer. I do not have to show anyone my gun to be safe. In fact most people who meet me have no idea that I do carry a weapon. This is a personal choice for me and I believe that those who are responsible are the quiet majority you never read or hear about.
I think [United States] is too free so these things happened over and over again.
I suppose gun is sold to person who has no qualification for mental condition. Correct me if I'm wrong.
