I Would Love To Know What You're Thinking
I hear that the majority of people who are interested in Psychology just want to get closer to knowing what the people around them are thinking. Call it a self-esteem boost if you will.
I don't think it has anything to do with self-esteem. I think it has to do with humanitys natural curiosity with our minds. To learn what others are thinking is to know their mind and to be able to better understand how people think and how our brains work. Its also a sign of just how nosey we are as a people, we always want to know whats going on with everyone else. Much like "gossip" always is interested in only the "Juicy" tidbits of information, we are often the same way. We are want to know what we don't know already, even if its something we shouldn't know.
I whole heartedly agree with Konquererz's view. However, there are many reasons why people are interested in knowing what you are thinking and they are as follows:
1) If you are attracted to an individual, then it is only natural for you to be fascinated with every aspect of the individual.
2) Sometimes you may wish to create a favourable impression on your boss and therefore, it may be an advantage to know how your boss' mind works.
3) It is always good to assess a person's mood, so you will know when to approach him/her on "sensitive issues."
4) Everyone enjoys meeting someone who "thinks" the same way, since this creates a feeling of belonging (to a group or peer) and acceptance.
5) Unfortunately, predators are always interested in knowing how your mind works, to use this information on your strengths and weaknesses, to their advantage.
