The whole thing I have heard about it is that people study Philosophy simply because they can't come up with anything profound on their own.

That would be incorrect, philosophy is an exercise in logic. People study philosophy as a way to exercise their minds. Many however start in a hope of finding answers to questions often regarding God and purpose of life, these answers do not exist, the closest we can fin are merely metaphysical illusions. After this is realized the emphasis is then placed upon the development of rational thinking.
