What does the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) do?

NIDA is a Federal scientific research institute under the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NIDA is the largest supporter of the world's research on drug abuse and addiction. NIDA-funded scientific research addresses the most fundamental and essential questions about drug abuse, including tracking emerging drug use trends, understanding how drugs work in the brain and body, developing and testing new drug treatment and prevention approaches, and disseminating findings to the general public and special populations.

I think that NIDA is most useful in getting out information about the latest and greatest new drugs on the market. They are most known for getting information out about illicit drugs, but they also track many other types of drugs that are not illegal but can be abused. What you will be surprised by is the sheer about of drugs that can be abused, most of which are legal. I find most of their information is fair and unbiased, but occasionally they are a little off center, and their information is incorrect according to other studies that say something different, many times several other studies differ from their opinion being the only one suggesting it is addictive.
