The purpose of Echelon is to spy upon people's phone calls, and internet usage to supposdly stop terrorists. I think that is crap, it really is to gain more power and abuse the citizens of the world. |

Its naive to think you can ever get permanent safety, it cannot happen. Your trading liberty for safety that does not exist as long as someone wants to kill you. You just trade liberty for safety that is only as good as the technology your enemies are using.
And in an ironic twist of reality, I am watching the science channel right now and guess what its about? Its about spying in the world today, talking about and demonstrating technology that is used. Its really uncanny. Guess what secret program that has recently been exposed they are talking about now? You guessed it, Echelon. Problem is, this collects information from everything from faxes to cell phones. It literally collects any type of communication using spoken and written word. The information, it appears, is shared among governments. It does exist and is supposed to be classified, yet several bases have already been identified. They aren't being conspiracy theory, its a show about existing technology, in this case, in the spy industry!
The other interesting thing is that they are demonstrating technology that is able to influence your mood. It is being demonstrated and working on people who don't know its happening. They are also using it to cause people to think they are hearing noises and voices that aren't there. All using microwave signals. Sorry mouse,in my opinion, if you are willing to sacrifice any liberty for the sake of safety, sacrifice the liberty our fore fathers laid their life down for, I say your just wrong.
Sorry Yellowknife, you were dead on with this one, this technology does exist, indeed has existed and has been used for many years. I guess its true, just because your paranoid doesn't mean everyones not out to get you.
You're right Konq. Permanent safety has been a pipe dream since men started building castle walls. There never has, nor will there ever be permanent safety, but which is the worst demon? Our government doing its best to "seeum comin" or doing nothing and watching another 911? Where is the dividing line? How would you keep track of a radical religion whose only desire is to kill you?
Offtopic but, I hope this gets out. Our first storm of the year is a doozy. Lightning is popping and cracking and disconnecting my phone line, so I'm gonna get off this thing. |

I seem to recall that this government did nothing to stop 9-11. the people who tried were ignored so what did my liberty get traded for? So that corporate politicians the world over can know everyones business.
It was a U.S. President who stood before the world on television and proclaimed a "new world order." Is it simple coincidence that both Russia and the U.S. wound up in the hands of those with ties to the intelligence community, or that the Pope who was standing beside Bush Sr. is the head of the only church to receive diplomatic treatment?
Voice stress analysis is used to verify a speaker in different recordings and a I.P. address is easily traceable to a physical address. Computers can be used to look for specific words or voices. It can't be all that hard when even video games are capable of having voice commands. Look at Jane's Combat Simulations U.S.A.F. The Government always has technology that is far ahead of the public, so it's pretty naive to say that they can't do anything that I can't do. Look at the recent unveiling of this translator.www.aol.comWhat are the odds that the government had nothing to do with the development of this technology before it was sent to our troops? It doesn't seem to require that a specific speaker use it for it to work. McKaffee's Internet Suite 9.0 keeps a log of what computers attempt to connect to mine and traces their I.P. address, so how hard is it for the government to track the internet usage of people? I don't doubt that our freedom is threatened and I don't think that it'll ever be taken by a terrorist.

Excellent point Roy, we have documented fact our government did indeed know about this already. The problem is that our government get inundated with threats constantly. There are phone threats and plans and internet plans intercepted all the time. They had the same before restricting our freedoms, and it doesn't help to know ten thousand different plans in detail if none of them are real.
If we sacrifice our freedom to make us, essentially, no safer than we were, then they win. Sacrificing our liberty to protect us from them means they win. Spying on over seas, and other countries is one thing, spying on us is another. Not only does it not keep us safer, it gives the government more control over us. In fact, the spying on citizens has yielded absolutely zero in the way of preventing a terrorist attack or finding a single terrorist. So what has? It has been the tactics they did before, putting more man power into investigating things that they have found out.
Echelon is primarily about spying on US citizens, perfected through use over seas during the cold war. Echelon is not being primarily used to protect us by spying on terrorist factions, they are using it to spy on us, and thats just not right.
Here is the irony:
Bush says he is fighting the war on terror for what?
Freedom?
Just say the truth already:
You are just greedy for personal information and you need a justifiable excuse.
I certainly do not support Al-Qaeda, killing innocent civilians and using them as an instrument of political collateral.
But Bush supporting spying on U.S. citizens and destroying their constutional rights that you swore to uphold?
We are not terrorists. I am sure you are one of the proponents of National ID Cards.
