This is phenominal! LDS_Forever, thank you for the research you've done.

Rather off topic, but...
Reading this thread reminds me of two other threads. The first is the thread that discusses if men and women are equal, and the other, I believe was started by Nighthawk, discusses things that were changed in the church and why.

Holders Priesthood Sisters and Blessings Mothers

Superme, thanks for your comments.

This is such a fascinating topic, I really need to discuss this with my husband and take the issue in Prayer to Heavenly Father.

On September 15th, 1884 Eliza R. Snow printed on the Exponent "Should members of the Relief Society go the Bishop for counsel?" the following: (This is an extract from the original)

QUOTE
....Is it necessary for sisters to be set apart to officiate in the sacred ordinances of washing, anointing, and laying on of hands in administering to the sick? It certainly is not. Any and all sisters who honor their holy endowments, not only have right, but should feel it a duty, whenever called upon to administer to our sisters in these ordinances, which God has graciously committed to His daughters as well as to His sons; and we testify that when administered and received in faith and humility they are accompanied with almighty power.

Inasmuch as God our Father has revealed these sacred ordinances and committed them to His Saints, it is not only our privilege but our imperative duty to apply them for the relief of human suffering. We think we may safely say thousands can testify that God has sanctioned the administration of these ordinances by our sisters with the manifestation of His healing influence.

Food for thought.

I just wanted to clarify an important point with regards to the Women having the Priesthood. It seems like they had the Priesthood based on some quotes I provided before but what Brigham Young and others probably meant by "Emma was the one to whom the female priesthood was first given" "Mary A. Young admitted in to the hiest [highest] orderer [order of] Preasthood [sic]." could have perfectly meant about these women obtaining the Second Anointing and no more than that (A member of another site was mentioning this) but I will have to research more about it.

Rather off topic, but...
I think I may ask Santa Claus to bring me the 2006 Gospellink edition biggrin.gif

I haven't updated this thread for quite a while and I wonder how many of the sisters in this forum give blessings to their kids?

I have heard many of the Sisters give their opinions about this but I think the basic thing we need to remember is we each have a role. Women have their part to play and so do the men. Having it this way places a need for families to be closer together. If the matriarch in the home could give blessings too it would really subdue the "usefulness" of the husband in that way. I know that sounds kind of harsh but I'm just showing how wise the plan of Heavenly Father is with these things.

I disagree. First because women at home CAN give blessings. They won't give a blessing by the power of the Priesthood but they can give blessings. Also, I don't know how exactly doing that will subdue the usefulness of the husband. We live in other times. Sometimes husbands away from home for long periods of time, sometimes there are single mothers out there with a very sick child in the middle of the night, etc and I believe that having sisters giving blessings as they have done since the Church started a very useful thing.

The Church through a Spokeswoman (timing?), sort of gave a statement with regards to the hype of some groups who are asking that women can be ordained to the Priesthood.

international QUOTE
"The practice of ordaining men to the priesthood was established by Jesus Christ himself and is not a decision to be made by those on Earth,"

The group's response:

international QUOTE
"We believe in revelation, and we know change comes through revelation," Source 2

So the Church got the General Relief Society President and the Young Women's General President to talk about women and the leadership roles. The timing is surely not coincidental.

international QUOTE
Ruth Todd: Tell us a little bit about some of the councils that you sit on; I know a lot of people know that you"re a president, but your job entails quite a bit more.

Sister Dalton: Well, so Sister Burton and I serve on the Church Education System board, and that's no small thing because it involves, okay, BYU, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Hawaii,

Sister Burton: LDS Business

Sister Dalton: LDS Business College.

Sister Burton: Seminaries and Institutes.

Sister Dalton: All the seminaries and institutes. And we meet monthly in that setting with the First Presidency and all the presidents of each of those universities in a board meeting, which I absolutely love because we are a part of this because we sort of represent the segment that is affected by the decisions on that board.

Sister Burton: I have an opportunity to meet with my counselors and the Presiding Bishopric at least monthly. And that's a marvelous opportunity to counsel together about things concerning the welfare of members of the Church. It's quite an incredible experience to sit with the Presiding Bishopric and know that you're valued for what you bring and they are listening. There have been a couple of occasions that we've sat in those meetings where we've counseled for two hours, sometimes two and a half, and then Bishop Stevenson will say, "I feel that the sisters have a strong opinion on this, or we have not - we need to think about this more, considering what the sisters have brought that we hadn't considered before. Let's table this decision until we've all had a chance to think some more about it." And I have appreciated that. It's been nothing but an ennobling experience, and it's a great opportunity.

Ruth Todd: Tell me about the council system. How is it supposed to work? How does it work for you, and how is it supposed to work on all the levels of the Church?

Sister Burton: It certainly applies. We are asked to model what we hope happens on every level, which is what the Brethren do. They don't just talk about you should hold councils, they demonstrate it, and then we take that and try and help sisters and stakes and ward levels see that they are an essential part of that council.
