Debo Adegbile
Senate blocks Obama nominee to run Justice Dept. Civil Rights Division
Republicans and some Democrats opposed Debo Adegbile's nomination because of his 2009 efforts to have the death penalty overturned for Mumia Abu-Jamal, a black journalist and activist who was convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1981. Adegbile's work on the case was under the auspices of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Abu-Jamal case has long been a point of conflict between liberal activists and law enforcement groups. Ref.
