Workaholic
Do you belong to that group of people who never have enough working hours to complete all your assigned tasks? Perhaps you work overtime or bring work home. In fact, you may be a workaholic without knowing it!
I was inspired to open this thread after I saw a show about workaholic people in the TV show 'Lifestyle Magazine' run by the 7th Day-Adventists.
Now, you're wondering how I know if I am a workaholic or my wife/boyfriend/husband/son is one?
Here are some hints and characteristics that a workaholic has:
* She/He often suffers from headaches, allergies, tiredness, indigestion, stomach aches, ulcers, chest pains, dizziness...
*She/He is easily angry or agitated, suffers from insomnia and from memory blanks, has short attention spans, cannot relax and has mood swings.
Here are some questions to ask yourself, if the most of the answers are yes, you definetly need to see a doctor for treatment:
*When you are asked to stop working to pick up your sick child at school or daycare, do you lose your temper?
*When you wake up in the morning, are you grumpy during the weekend and happy on weekdays?
*When you talk to your spouse, do you focus on your work much more than on your family?
*Has your spouse stopped waiting for you at dinner?
*Do you work over 40 hours per week?
*When you're on vacation, do you always end up working or talking to a colleague from the office?
*Do you eat lunch at your desk?
*Are you described at work as an energetic and competitive person, while at home you are lethargic and depressed?
* Do you lack patience with your friends and family, but not with your work colleagues?
* Do you often miss dates with your spouse because of work?
You can give your thoughts about it here too. Thanks.

This sounds like me! My Name is JB and I am a workaholic.
Running an online business demands a lot of your time! Emails to answer, scripts to modify, pages to update and of course, money to be made!
My morning starts 7-7:30am and I go until 2am! Or if I am on a roll I go non-stop! A lot of that is attributed to dial up speeds, and when users are online.

I don't consider myself a workaholic, but I am very passionate about my work with the girls. I talk about them a lot after hours, but not to the point of that's what dominates my life. I do think about stuff after hours, but it doesn't take away from what else I'm having to so. I have to plan ahead for some activities, and sometimes the only place I cando that is at home. I don't work more than 20 hours a week.
I don't consider myself a workaholic but my wife does. It is more a fact that I like my job but I feel like I've developed a good balance between work and the rest of my life. During my last big project where I was absent on the forum, I felt like a workaholic because of all the hours I put in, even when I was home. However, I feel a workaholic is more defined as one who would rather be involved in work related items than other things.

I can sometimes be a workaholic. The problem is its not by choice. Sometimes I just have to get work done. When work needs to be done, its my responsibility at work, I am the tech lead and have certain responsibilities. I definitely don't like having to work the extra hours, but you have to do what you have to do sometimes.

I was a workaholic for most of my working life. My father set the example before me and I followed it. Then one day my youngest son who is very talented, but not very energetic, started saying something that drove me nuts. When things didn't go as planned, or just didn't get finished he would say, "Oh well." and walk away to start again the next day. After I had my first open heart surgery there was no way I could continue as before. I was forced to go nuts, or learn to say, "Oh well."
I also learned in counseling that being a workaholic has the same effect on family life as being an alcoholic. I have found that statement to be too true. All you workaholics read the above description of a workaholic and think about what you are doing to your health, your relationship with your wife, and your children. What are you missing at home?
I learned the hard way.....twice! Being a workaholic cost me two wives and my first family.
