In reality, this concern is not; if you read the D & C, the Nauvoo temple was never really finished, and the Saints were not protected, they had to leave; so they fell under a curse. The higher priesthood was not passed on, it died with Joseph and Hyrum Smith. The Church has actually only been operating with the Aaronic priesthood all of these years.
And besides, if you know your scriptures, it becomes clear that, the higher portion of the Melchizedek Priesthood, is only conferred upon the worthy, by our Lord personally, whom he considerers worthy.
The offices of the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthood in the beginning was never priesthood, but offices in the Church, sustained by a vote of the members; early missions went out without being ordained to any priesthoods.
Brigham Young has writings, commingling that he was never a Prophet and Seer, he only wanted to be President of the Church. President Heber J.Grant, noted that as far as he knew, no one after Joseph Smith, had ever seen our Lord, and visitations of angels and signs and gifts of the Spirit seemed to be nearly gone from Church.
